Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
