The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
